Privacy Policy

This site (inodes.org) is run by John Ferlito. This policy explains what personal information the site collects, why, and what you can do about it. I aim to handle personal information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
The short version
This is a personal blog and professional site. It is a static website with no accounts, no logins and no newsletter. I don't run my own analytics and I don't sell or rent anyone's personal information. The only personal information I actively collect is what you choose to send me — by booking a meeting or emailing me.
Information you give me
Booking a meeting
The Meet with John page embeds a scheduling widget provided by Calendly. If you book a meeting, you provide your name, email address and any answers to the booking questions directly to Calendly, and Calendly passes those details to me so I can hold the meeting. Calendly also handles the calendar invitation and any reminders. Calendly's handling of your information is governed by its own privacy notice.
Contacting me
If you email me, I receive your email address, your message and anything else you include. I use it to reply to you and, where relevant, to keep a record of our correspondence.
Information collected automatically
Hosting
The site is hosted on Amazon Web Services (Amazon S3 and Amazon CloudFront). I have not enabled request logging, so I don't keep a record of visits. AWS necessarily processes technical information such as your IP address, browser user agent and the pages requested in order to deliver the site to you, and may retain some of that information for its own operational and security purposes.
Advertising measurement
Every page loads an advertising measurement pixel from OpenAI. It records page views and, if you complete a booking on the Meet with John page, an "appointment scheduled" conversion event together with an identifier for that booking. I use this only to understand whether advertising is working; I don't use it to build a profile of you. This pixel is a third-party script and may set cookies or use similar technologies in your browser, and it involves disclosing technical information about your visit to OpenAI, whose handling of that information is governed by its own privacy policy. You can block it with a content blocker or by blocking scripts from bzrcdn.openai.com, and the site will continue to work normally.
Things this site deliberately doesn't do
- Search stays on your device. The search feature runs entirely in your browser. Your search terms are never sent to me or to anyone else.
- Fonts are served from this site. Web fonts are downloaded when the site is built and served from inodes.org, so viewing a page doesn't send a request to a font provider.
- No analytics of my own. I don't run Google Analytics or any equivalent product, and I set no cookies of my own.
Comments on older posts
Some older posts show comments carried across from the earlier WordPress version of this site. Those comments include the name, and sometimes the website address, that the commenter supplied at the time. The site no longer accepts new comments. If one of those comments is yours and you'd like it removed or de-identified, email me and I'll do it.
Who I share information with
I don't sell, rent or trade personal information. I disclose it only to the service providers that make this site and my work possible, and where the law requires it. The providers involved are:
- Amazon Web Services — hosting and content delivery
- Calendly — meeting scheduling
- OpenAI — advertising measurement
- Google Workspace — my email and calendar
These providers are based in, or store information in, the United States and other countries outside Australia. By using the booking form or emailing me, you consent to your information being handled overseas on that basis.
How long I keep things
I keep booking details and correspondence for as long as I need them for the conversation or engagement they relate to, and afterwards for as long as I may need them for record-keeping, tax or legal purposes. I delete what I no longer need.
Security
I take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, loss and unauthorised access, including using reputable providers, multi-factor authentication and encrypted connections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so I can't guarantee absolute security.
Children
This site is intended for a professional adult audience and isn't directed at children. I don't knowingly collect personal information from children.
Accessing or correcting your information, and complaints
You can ask me what personal information I hold about you, ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it. Email johnf@inodes.org and I'll respond within a reasonable time. I may need to verify your identity first.
If you think I've mishandled your personal information, please tell me first so I have a chance to fix it. If you're not satisfied with my response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
Changes to this policy
I may update this policy as the site or my practices change. The current version always lives at this address, with the date it was last updated at the top.
